On September 28, 2024, the Rotary Club of Colombo, along with its Interact and Rotaract Clubs, participated in the ‘#CleanUpSriLanka’ initiative. This event focused on removing plastic waste from Mount Lavinia Beach, one of Colombo’s premier seaside destinations.
The CleanSL campaign involved 70 Rotary Clubs, mobilizing over 2,000 Rotarians at more than 500 locations to collect over 400 metric tons of plastic waste.
These photos showcase the efforts of the Rotary Club of Colombo, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Moratuwa, the Rotary Club of Mount Lavinia, and the dedicated Interactors, Rotaractors, and other volunteers—totaling over 300 participants.
The collected plastic waste was sent for recycling in Moratuwa. In Sri Lanka, plastic waste generation is estimated at 1.59 million metric tons per year, with approximately 5% being mismanaged.
